301 Redirect

A permanent redirect that sends visitors and search engines from an old web address to a new one.

A 301 redirect is a permanent instruction that automatically sends anyone visiting an old web address to a new one. The "301" is the technical status code that tells browsers and search engines the move is permanent, not temporary.

Use a 301 when you change a page URL, move to a new domain, switch to HTTPS, or merge two pages. It is important because it passes most of the old page ranking strength to the new one and prevents visitors hitting dead "404 not found" pages. Done well, redirects protect the SEO value you have built up over time.
